Trading Tuesday: 10 000 hours
I first read about it in Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers. And here’s another excellent article by Adam Khoo about this principle.
The 10 000 hours.
I really like it the first time I learned about it. I am really grateful for Malcolm Gladwell for coming up with this excellent book. What is it about actually is this is the magic number that he comes up with to sum the amount of time spent by successful people on things that they are successful at.
The Beatles, Bill Gates all extremely successful people in their chosen fields devoted 10 000 hours before they became who they are. In this world of instant gratification – that is something to think about isn’t ?
Since learning this principle, I have been working on putting in the hours more diligently. Minimising the distractions, although at this rate rather unsucessfully. But I will persevere, Insha-Allah.
To those who wondered why they haven’t achieved whatever they want to achieve – this principle gave an excellent benchmark. How many hours have you put into it?
As entrepreneurs, especially when you are starting out and resources are scarce, hold on to this principle real tight. When you put in the hours, Insha-Allah, the results will show.
It’s also interesting to note, that the quantifiers mentioned is hours. And not money. As indeed, time is what everybody has in their hand.
Let us all work towards our 10 000 hours!

I got that email from him too.
If you average it out. With focus and practise, it only takes like 1.14 years. That we have not minus off sleep hours, family time and leisure.
So let’s divide it again..
Assume we sleep for 6 hours
2 hours for self, bathing and so on
2 hours to makan/minum
3 hours for leisure, family time
Already 11 hours left.
So 10000 / (11 x 365) = 2.49 years
This number was actually an average time line a person could be a Millionaire. However there’s always other factors and usually the average is actually 10 years from the books I read.
But with the internet, the numbers could get even smaller.
